Foundation’s Scholarship Award Total Reaches High-Water Mark of $100k (2009-2016)

Awarding scholarship grants to individuals and non-profits within the maritime industry since 1994, The Passenger Vessel Foundation (PVF) has reached $100k in cumulative funding from 2009 thru 2016 with its 2016 award distribution.

The PVF Scholarship program is intended to promote professionalism, safety and opportunity within the field for those individuals currently employed, or who wish to become employed, in the segment of maritime service represented by U.S. domestic Passenger Vessels.  Grants are awarded with a focus on educational assistance; research; training and the improvement of safety within the maritime industry.

Recipients have voiced their appreciation for PVF’s support.  “With my PVF scholarship award, I attended a USCG-approved course in vessel, company and facility security. I am grateful for PVF’s support in improving my understanding of this vital topic as well as in making me a more educated trainer for my captains and crew,” noted Stephen Deschenes, Operations Manager, Boston Harbor Cruises.

Headquartered in Stoddard, WI, The Passenger Vessel Foundation is a 501©3 charitable organization dedicated to supporting the future leaders of the Passenger Vessel Industry. This organization awards scholarship grants for continuing education, training, research and programs that enhance the safety of the industry.

In addition to its scholarship mission, PVF is dedicated to rewarding high quality merchant mariners for US flagged passenger vessels through:  an award program for passenger vessel employees who demonstrate excellence in safety and security; marine crew training videos and manuals produced in cooperation with the Passenger Vessel Association; and programs of public awareness that address the issues of concern to the industry, including but not limited to environmental, business, and maritime issues.

A Passenger Vessel Industry Icon Lives On
Stoddard, WI—17 December 2015 — Today the Passenger Vessel Foundation announced receipt of its largest donor gift to date.  The Padelford Packet Boat Company has provided a gift in excess of $155,000 to the Foundation. “The Passenger Vessel Foundation is overwhelmed with this generous gift!  It is a wonderful way for the current owners of Padelford to continue the memory of Captain Bowell for many years to come while ensuring years of support to the Foundation’s mission,” said Rob McMahon, Passenger Vessel Foundation President.

Padelford Packet Boat Company The Padelford Packet Boat Company was founded in 1969 by Captain William D. Bowell, Sr. and continues to operate today on the Mississippi River from Harriet Island, Saint Paul, MN.  The gift to the Passenger Vessel Foundation in part will form an endowment allowing for semi-annual grants awarded in the name of company founder Captain William D. Bowell, Sr.  Bowell served as the first President of the National Association of Passenger Vessel Owners (NAPVO) from 1971 to 1979, known today as the Passenger Vessel Association (PVA).  Captain Bowell was part of the inaugural class inducted into the PVA Hall of Fame in 2011.   Steve Bowell, President of Padelford Packet Boat Co, “Our Industry depends on an educated workforce and a safe operating environment for future growth and sustainability. The Foundation provides resources that help our industry grow”. Company Vice President and co-owner Captain Gus Gaspardo serves on the Board of Directors of the PVA. “We are excited for the opportunity to further the good work of the Passenger Vessel Foundation,” said Captain Gus Garspardo, Vice President/Co-Owner of Padelford Packet Boat Company. “It was especially meaningful for our founder, Captain Bowell, to be remembered while furthering the education and safety causes in passenger vessel industry.” Founded in 1994, the Passenger Vessel Foundation, a 501 (c) (3) organization was established to ensure that the passenger vessel industry continues with its dedication to continue furthering the education and development of safety resources.

Please join us for the 2015 Katica Klassic Memorial Tournament @ the Western Region Conference to benefit the Passenger Vessel Foundation on October 28, 2015.  We will have a great day of golf at the beautiful Riverwalk Golf Club in San Diego, just minutes from the Hyatt Regency Mission Bay, This four person team best ball event includes your greens fee, range balls, golf cart, lunch, on course beverage and a non hosted awards reception following the golf. Tee time is 8:30 am shotgun start.  We will form a team for you…this is wonderful FUN event each year.
